Song of the Day: Nico – “I’m Not Sayin'”

I love Nico and am a huge fan of her solo records, especially the John Cale-produced trio of works from the late ’60s and early ’70s, but also the later North African-accented Drama of Exile.

However, there’s a real pop joy to her 1965 debut single, “I’m Not Sayin’,” which cast her in a sort of European Sandie Shaw role. It fit pretty nicely, but the real Nico was to emerge on the bleak, terrifying, but strangely beautiful The Marble Index in 1968.
